Biography

At the time when Croesus sent his embassy to form an alliance with "the mightiest of the Greeks" (about 554 BC), the war with Tegea, which in the late reigns went against them, had now been decided in the Spartans' favour, under Anaxandridas and Ariston. They also had main carriage of the suppression of the tyrannies, and with it the establishment of Spartan hegemony.

The Battle of Tenea took place in 553 BC against Croesus. Anaxandridas won the battle and sent 50 of his troops to go north and the rest of his troops to stay with him.
,
In 551 BC, Croesus blocked the Spartans in the Battle of Greene and the Spartans attacked them. Anaxandridas troops were weak so they took a long break. In 549 BC, Croesus and Anaxandridas both got trirareas and it became the first battle called Battle of Trinamean to use boats instead of fighting in land. Anaxandridas lost the battle but fled. In 548 BC, they met Croesus in Baeri and battled again. Anaxandridas won the battle of Baeri and Croesus and his troops fled before they become to powerful. Next, in 547 BC, Croesus and Anaxandridas met again with their trirareas and battled again in the Battle of Syrah. Anaxandridas won the battle and Sparta and Tegea is safe.

After the war, Anaxandridas trained other boys how to face pain and died in 520 BC. Cleomene, his older son, became king of Sparta and things weren’t very good. The Greco-Persian Warr started in 499 BC, around his sons reign. And his younger son, Leonidas who became king of Sparta after Cleomenes, died in the Batttle of Thermopylae.

Family

Anaxandridas II was a son of Leon of Sparta.

Anaxandridas's wife was deemed barren. As he would not divorce her, the ephors made Anaxandridas II take a second wife. By her Anaxandridas II had Cleomenes I, and after this, by his first wife he had three sons; Dorieus (father of Euryanas), famous Leonidas I, and Cleombrotus.

Anaxandridas II was succeeded by his son from his second marriage, Cleomenes I.
