List of titular churches
In the Catholic Church, a cleric who is created a cardinal is assigned a titular church in Rome, Italy. These are churches in the city, under the Diocese of Rome, which can be assigned to cardinals as honorary designations that symbolise their relationship to the diocese and to its bishop, the pope, who is the head of the church as a whole.[1] According to the Code of Canon Law, a cardinal may assist the titular church through counsel or through patronage, though "he has no power of governance over it, and he should not for any reason interfere in matters concerning the administration of its good, or its discipline, or the service of the church".[2]
There are two types of titular churches: titles and deaconries. A title (Latin: titulus) is a titular church that is assigned to a cardinal priest (of the second order of the College of Cardinals), whereas a deaconry (Latin: diaconia) is a titular church that is assigned to a cardinal deacon (of the third order).[2] When a cardinal priest or a cardinal deacon is then appointed as a cardinal bishop (of the first order), he loses his titular church and is transferred to the title of a vacant suburbicarian diocese, in the vicinity of Rome. Eastern Catholic patriarchs who are created cardinal bishops are not assigned titles of suburbicarian dioceses.[2] Other Eastern Catholic cardinals are assigned titular churches, as usual.
When a cardinal dies or is transferred, the titular church becomes vacant; another cardinal can then be assigned to it. Other churches in Rome can also be established as new titular churches, if required. Cardinals may request to be transferred to a new titular church in a consistory; in addition, when a cardinal deacon opts to become a cardinal priest (usually after ten years), the cardinal may choose to be transferred from his deaconry to a vacant title or for his deaconry to be elevated pro hac vice ('for this occasion') to a title.[2] When cardinal priests or cardinal deacons are additionally "co-opted" as cardinal bishops, without being assigned titles of suburbicarian dioceses, they keep their titular churches, which effectively become equivalent to suburbicarian dioceses pro hac vice in their own right.[a][3] Occasionally, a titular church may be held in commendam ('in trust') to a cardinal who has been transferred to a different titular church or to a suburbicarian diocese.[4]
As of 24 January 2019,[update] there are 232 current titular churches, 164 of which are titles and 68 of which are deaconries. Additionally, there are 25 historical titular churches that have been suppressed (indicated with italics, where the status of the church as a title or as a deaconry has been removed or transferred to another church; this includes churches that were later re-established as titular churches of another type) and seven suburbicarian dioceses. Eighteen titular churches (eight titles and ten deaconries) are currently vacant. The statuses of 59 titular churches (45 titles, 13 deaconries and two suppressed deaconries)[b] as basilicas are also indicated.

Key to locations
The presence of certain abbreviations associated with locations (as below) indicate that they are situated within the boundaries of the city of Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital. These represent the type of local subdivision of Rome in which they are located, followed by the name of the subdivision; they are generally arranged as follows, outwards from the city centre: rioni ('districts'), quartieri ('quarters'), suburbi
Locations for suburbicarian dioceses are located either in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital (RM) or in the neighbouring Province of Rieti (RI), both provinces of the Italian region of Lazio.

As of 24 January 2019,[update] there are 164 titles, eight of which are vacant.

Suburbicarian dioceses
There are seven suburbicarian dioceses, in the vicinity of Rome, to the titles of which the six cardinal bishops (excluding cardinals who are additionally co-opted into the order and cardinals who are Eastern Catholic patriarchs) are assigned. They are not part of the Diocese of Rome, but are separate dioceses that are suffragan to it, generally located outside the city. Suburbicarian dioceses are not titular churches per se, but share a similar function, in that they are principally honorary and titular assignments of cardinals. Since 1914, the suburbicarian diocese of Ostia has been assigned as an additional title of the Dean of the College of Cardinals, in addition to his original title when first appointed a cardinal bishop.[2][284] The four current cardinal bishops who are Eastern Catholic patriarchs (as of 28 June 2018[update]) have their respective patriarchates as their titles.[n][2][289]
The locations are those of the respective diocesan cathedrals. As of 24 February 2009,[update] there are no vacant suburbicarian dioceses.
