History

The first event took place in 1999 and the event takes place in May each year. Although it is an ITV production, the events were held at the BBC Television Centre, in London until 2010. The 2011 awards relocated to Granada Studios in Manchester, then to The London Studios for the 2012 awards. The 2014 awards took place at the Hackney Empire, as did the 2016 and 2018 awards. The 2015 awards were held at Palace Theatre, Manchester.

The soap operas nominated for awards are Coronation Street, Doctors, EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks. Now-defunct soaps that were formerly nominated for awards were Brookside, Crossroads, Family Affairs and Night and Day.

Coronation Street and EastEnders had been the only two soaps to win the "Best British Soap" award from 1999 to 2013, until Hollyoaks won it in 2014. Emmerdale became the fourth soap to win the award in 2016, meaning that only Doctors have yet to win the award out of the current contenders.

As of 2017, EastEnders actress Lacey Turner is the most decorated performer with 10 wins.

In 2016, it was reported that the award for outstanding achievement off-screen would be known as the Tony Warren award following the death of Tony Warren, the creator of Coronation Street.[1][2]

It was confirmed on 2 May 2017 that for the first time in the history of the Soap Awards, the 2017 awards would be broadcast live on ITV.[3] However, on 31 May 2017, it was announced the event would not be broadcast live in 2017, due to a scheduling conflict that had resulted in ITV moving forward the live grand final of Britain's Got Talent. On 1 May 2018, ITV announced that for the 20th anniversary of the show, it will be broadcast live (for first time) on Saturday 2 June 2018.[citation needed]

As of 2018, Coronation Street have the most awards with 111, followed by EastEnders with 106, Emmerdale with 44, Hollyoaks with 35, Doctors with 14, Brookside with 9, Family Affairs with 3, Home and Away with 2 and Night and Day with 1.
